Luminous Beasts
Luminous Beasts
Series Statement
Luminous Beasts concerns the intersection of wonder and the everyday. This body of work investigates a narrative of disruption through the unlikely pairing of radiant suburban pools and transfigured household objects. A progressive use of this duality sparks a rise from the familiar to the extraordinary.
Throughout this work, tensions build amongst an influx of contrasting visual elements. The central chimera objects made of hybrid plastics and organic matter dictate this newfound order of space and form. Carefully observed forms and faithfully described surfaces are balanced by the weightless spaces of my imagination.
These paintings are derived from a combination of sources including photos taken in my studio and images found on the internet. Each work is digitally altered with juxtaposed images, removed shapes, and enhanced colors into a final reference image which I paint directly from in a traditional manner.
In a place of relaxation and escape the viewer is confronted by ghosts of our society’s wastefulness. The environmental impact of our consumer culture and everyday actions weighs heavily on my mind. I pursue a deeper understanding of who we are and what we leave behind.
